Dear District 64 Community Members:

In fall 2017, District 64 invited our community members to participate in an online conversation about how we are fulfilling our middle school mission. We asked what we are doing well, where we can improve, and what other things we can do to support the middle school experience. This online conversation was part of District 64’s review of our middle school program linked to the 2020 Vision Strategic Plan. (Please see below to read our middle school mission and for more information on our current program.)

We’re pleased to report that nearly 1,000 stakeholders took part in our Thoughtexchange online conversation! Reflecting on our middle school mission, community members shared nearly 1,400 thoughts and assigned more than 39,000 ratings after viewing the thoughts of others. We are very grateful for this high level of participation and interest.

This website presents the results. Thank you for taking the time to read the thoughts from our community, and to learn what common themes have emerged from this exchange.

Moving forward, the results of this Thoughtexchange will help inform the Middle School Committee’s work and the administration’s spring 2018 recommendation to the Board of Education.

Again, thank you for visiting this website and for your interest in District 64’s middle school mission. We invite you to stay connected with us and follow our efforts to inspire every child to discover, learn, achieve, and care.

For your children,

Dr. Laurie Heinz

District 64’s Middle School Mission

“The mission of the Middle School Community of District 64 is to foster a safe, supportive and inclusive school environment that values diversity, social emotional learning, personal development, and acceptance of self and others. Educators, parents, and community members will work collaboratively to empower young adolescents through exploration, choice, and challenge. We will provide a rigorous and differentiated core and elective curriculum that includes real-world learning experiences and extracurricular opportunities. We will do this by building strong relationships with students that encourage growth and self advocacy in a student-centered environment.”

Our middle school mission is based on the characteristics of effective middle schools as outlined by the Association of Middle Level Education:
